JOE #6 extras

June 24, 2010

Tons of eggs in this issue!  Also a lot in the next one as well.  So let’s get started…

Page 1, panel 4: As I said before, this issue was about me breaking through my artistic horse illiteracy.  To make it extra hard, I decided to draw Clydesdales because I wanted bigger horses as a nod to the Death Dealer series.  In this panel they didn’t turn out too badly though.

Page 2-3, panel 2: That’s right—that’s The Dude in there.  Is there a comic featuring him yet?  Well there ought to be.  One printed on hemp.  And check out that big horse in the foreground!  Holy shit do those hooves not look right.  I shouldn’t have tackled such a hard angle until I was better prepared.

Page 4, panel 4: That’s Riker back there holding Troi.  Worf’s in the background getting all jealous.  But with the colors changed, I guess we can get away with it.  The DC characters are all safe of course, hence the warm embrace of Hellblazer and Wonder Woman.  When do I get to draw THAT comic?  I’d give her such a pointy nose…

Page 6, panel 5: Why is Dave Stewart awesome?  Because he pays attention to the line work.  All those painter effects in the BG match the feel of the blacks perfectly.  I don’t know a lot of colors who would have thought of that.  I even love the blue dots on her chin.  I have no idea what they would be, but who cares—they look great.

Page 7, panel 4: This is one of my many nods to Toppi.  And in case anyone ever accuses me of swiping, I even wrote “apologies to Toppi” next to that big house thingy.  So suck it.

Page 9, panel 1: Holy shit do I love drawing fish.  Each one took about ten seconds to ink, and damn was it fun.  And if you ever told me that I’d love drawing fish, I would have punched your mom and thrown up in her mouth and THEN called you a liar.

Page 10, panel 3: No, I don’t know what “danger hypo” means.

Page 11, panel 1: Robin and the Transformer looking guy ended up being together a lot, but I wish he’d been a yellow robot.  DC changed it because there were afraid he’d look too much like Bumble Bee.  Even though mine is a CRX and Bumble Bee is a Beetle.

Page 12: This is my attempt at a classic EC style cover as seen on something like “Strange Tales”.

Page 14, panel 3: I have no idea what Zyxy is grabbing here.  Mini grenades?  That’s what it looks like.  The secret to working with Grant is drawing each character with a lot of pouches.  That way when someone is suddenly holding something, you can pretend that they had it in their pouch all along.

Page 16, panel 1: After 5 issues of Joe being led through the story, this where he finally gets the nerve to take matters into his own hands.  When I drew this I was all “FINALLY!  Let’s see you start acting like a barbarian!”  From here on out, Joe’s hair is darker and he’s a little more intense.  All done on purpose.

Page 18, panel 1: Zyxy is my favorite character.  It wasn’t in the script, but I decided that she liked to pull people’s ears in the way a fed up mother would.  Grant tweaked the dialog to make it fit more, which helped the acting a lot.

Page 20-21: I won’t go through and name every egg here.  I’ve read a few comments from people who spotted almost everything—EXCEPT for the dude on the left holding that weird “double gun” thing.  Points for anyone who can name that character.  Also, I’m a little annoyed DC couldn’t just leave the damn Bat’ leth metallic.

Page 22, panel 1: If there’s only ONE REASON to read Joe, it’s because you need to see Robin driving his pet robot around with Batman riding in the passenger seat AND with Grey Ghost in the back seat—which CRXs don’t have.
