Page 1: The Picard knock-off was a problem with the DC lawyers. I told them that he could be fixed by making his jacket some other color than red, thus saving me the trouble of changing the art. I didn’t say anything when Dave kept it red, and now it’s in print! I’m so glad it got through.
Page 2: There’s a Madmartigan knock-off in panel 1. Also a Dick Tracy, but the yellow jacket didn’t make it in. I love how Batman and Gray Ghost are holding each other.
Page 4-5: I’m so glad I got to draw the Batmobile! And because it’s not a Batman comic, I got to do it my way.
Page 7: In panel 1 I drew a sign that read “Joe’s Comix’ but the words covered it up.
Page 8: Jack the Rat (or Chakk as he’s later called) changes throughout the series. Looking back now I’m suddenly struck with how skinny he was when I first drew him here. The more I drew him through the issues, the beefier he got. It’s definitely a continuity error that’s totally my fault, but it’s the sort of design change that can only come from drawing a character over and over and over. When you see him later on I think you’ll agree that he looks better when he’s more jacked (no pun intended).
Page 9: Grant had him taking only one sword, but I thought that two would be cooler. And what are the two coolest swords ever? A katana and a claymore.
Page 10-11: This spread originally had white gutters so that the last panel would have Joe falling into an open panel (without borders). My editor wanted to label Joe’s fantasy world with black gutters in hopes that it would make the story clearer. I agree with him, but the solution for the last panel ended up looking odd. Dave and I tried it a few different ways but we couldn’t find a way around it. Other than LEAVING IT LIKE IT WAS of course. ![]()
Page 12: Grant wanted the trees to have feathers instead of leaves. And I have no idea why.
Page 15: Each time we cut to the real world, I tried going back to white gutters. On this page you can see some of the strange solutions I ended up making when you have back-and-forth cutting between the two worlds.
Page 18: Joe’s gun apparently makes noise. I don’t know what he could use it for, but I’m on issue 5 now and he still hasn’t really used it. But it looks cool when he carries it.
Page 19: Here’s another page that originally had white gutters. A lot of the blacks run into to gutters so parts of the panel seem a little lost. I should have spoken up when my editor made that floating panel have a white border. It totally stands out for no reason.
Page 20: Joe’s bathroom is exactly my bathroom. That’s right everyonenow you can see where Sean Murphy goes poo.
